On October 10, 2023, over 160 fintech founders and financial industry stakeholders gathered at the Design Zentrum Hamburg for the first-ever Hamburg Fintech Day 2024. The event was designed to foster innovation, share success stories, and boost collaboration between traditional banks and fintech startups.
A Booming Fintech Scene in Hamburg
Since 2017, the number of fintech companies in Hamburg has skyrocketed from 30 to over 100. Dr. Andreas Dressel, Hamburg’s Senator for Finance, kicked off the event, emphasizing the importance of a financial sector to tackle today’s challenges. Hamburg’s InnoFinTech funding program, which has allocated EUR 9 million through 2025, has supported over 30 fintech startups since its inception in 2022.
Innovation and Collaboration: Key to Success
Fintechs and traditional banks still face hurdles, particularly when it comes to regulation and scalability. However, collaboration is essential. “It would help if banks promoted a culture of innovation,” said Max Knopp, Managing Director of Stock Republic. This sentiment was echoed throughout the event, as attendees called for more openness to new ideas within the financial sector.
The Future of Fintech: AI and B2B Opportunities
AI and business-to-business (B2B) fintech solutions were also key themes at the event. Thorsten Wittmütz of Next Commerce Accelerator highlighted B2B opportunities in the financial sector, while AI was discussed as a tool that can streamline processes and improve customer experiences. Though AI has more benefits for end-users, experts agree it will continue to shape the financial era.
Hamburg Fintech Day 2025 is already in the works, following the success of this year’s event. The conference provided an excellent platform for networking and innovation, setting a promising tone for the city’s fintech future.
